What should I do if I find an orphaned baby squirrel wandering about?
A baby squirrel may become orphaned for a number of reasons, most especially when the parent squirrel have moved out in search of food
or a new shelter. Sometimes squirrels become orphaned when home owners hire pest control agencies to eliminate their parent squirrels.
While it is best to return an orphaned squirrel to its other ( if the mother can be traced), it may also become a good idea if you raise
the orphaned squirrel by yourself, in a special cage.
Just before you start taking care of an orphaned squirrel, it will be ideal if you can locate a licensed animal rehabilitator for the squirrel,
you can call or ask a vet officer for this. A baby squirrel may need an animal rehabilitator if it has been badly injured while trying to search
for its parents. Just because you want to take care of a baby squirrel does not mean you must set up a nest for it in your home, as such may trigger
the beginning of a squirrel colony that can be very difficult to manage.
Squirrels may not require any vaccination but that does not mean they don’t deserve some special care. When orphaned squirrels are found, they are
usually dehydrated weak and very chilled. All these problems must first of all be handled before feeding the baby squirrel on any formula. Experts
recommend that an orphaned baby squirrel must be placed immediately in a cardboard or plastic container that has a heating pad under one side. The
cardboard or plastic container must also be lined with some cellulose fiber or paper towel to make the new home more comfortable for the squirrel.
Make sure the top of the cardboard is covered with a wire mesh to prevent the squirrel from escaping.
With a small tin can , insert a 40-watt light bulb at the roof of the new home of the squirrel to make it warmer. Make sure the new home is kept far
from children who may tamper with it from time to time. Make sure you use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the environment of the squirrel
and keep temperatures at less than 100 degree F. Next you need to find some powdered , instant animal formula food for the baby squirrel, Make sure you
check the label to be sure that it is suitable for the squirrel and if any side effects is noticed after feeding it with the formula then you must stop feeding
it immediately and send it to the animal control unit.
Raising a baby squirrel can be a difficult task to handle by yourself and this is the reason why you should take the animal to a licensed animal rehabilitator.
